You are not alone if you’ve got a fear of ladders. It is not unusual for many people to feel anxiety while climbing over a 6ft or 25 ft ladder.

So, sit back and be ready to say goodbye to your ladder-climbing phobia.

Is This Phobia Even Real?

You might have heard this question multiple times. Well, it can be hard for some to believe, but fear of ladders is a real phobia.

According to a research report published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 30 people out of 1000 experience anxiety while climbing a 25 ft telescopic extension ladder

Well, that explains that it is not unusual, and many people face it in their everyday life. Keep in mind that this fear is not acrophobia (fear of heights).

What Is The Fear Of Ladders Called?

It is known as climacophobia. Well, the name pretty much explains its definition. People with climacophobia fear climbing or coming down on ladders.

Usually, there is another fear associated with ladders. It is known as bathmophobia. In bathmophobia, people fear staircases and a ladder itself.

Can You Overcome Fear Of Ladders?

Certainly, Yes. Anyone can overcome this fear. Depending on the severity of your conditions, it can be hard or time taking, but it is possible.

Well, if you’re a vivid reader, you might have noticed a similar answer in the book, “overcoming fear of heights” by Martin M. Antony. But, I am not suggesting quickly reading 160 pages.

This is where I take hold and share my personal experience of how I overcome the fear of climbing on ladders.

Overcome Your Fear Of Ladders In 5 Steps

It is worth mentioning that, It all starts with belief and trust yourself (and your guts). Believe in yourself and be ready to live a life without a limit!

1. Choose The Right Ladder For Your Task

This is the most crucial step. Let’s say you need to clean the gutters of your roof; then, you’ll need either a roof ladder (for a single-storey) or a double storey ladder.

There is no in-between. There are over 10 different types of ladders. So, always be assured that you pick the right type and size as per your need.

2. Inspect Your Ladder Before Every Use

Before you step on your ladder, it is strongly recommended to ensure the ladder safety checklist. Make sure that there are no visible damages or loose rungs.

If you’re using a telescopic ladder, double-check its rung’s locking mechanism. Don’t use it if you notice any minimal fault, especially with the angle and structure.

3. Stick To The Weight Limit

Stick-To-The-Weight-Limit

In the UK, all industrial and domestic ladders have to be EN131 classified now. Before that, there were three classes, with the class 1 ladder being preferred widely.

Here’s the weight limit for all classes of ladder;

  • Class 1: 175KG
  • EN131 Class: 150KG
  • Class 3: 125KG

Keep in mind that only EN131 is specifically designed for commercial and domestic use. So, if you weigh more than the limit (150 kg), don’t climb up.

4. Right Angle Is Crucial

The best angle for ladder is 75 degrees against the wall. If you don’t position it correctly, you’ll hurt yourself. If you position it too near to the wall, the ladder will tilt either left or right.

Also, keep an eye on the weather. Don’t use a ladder without base support in the wet season.

5. Don’t Be A Hero

Whether you are climbing or coming down, take your time and always hold the rungs with a strong force. Similarly, don’t try to lean left or right or try to lift several things at once.

Dont-Be-A-Hero

Always secure a ladder before use. If the ladder support belt is not available, then don’t be shy to ask someone for help.

Ask For Help – Don’t Shy

If you have a severe ladders phobia and you have to use them on daily bases. Then, it might be difficult for you to hold on.

In this case, you must consider consulting with a close friend or seeking help from a psychologist or a support group.

Keep in mind that, on average, 515 ladder-related injuries are reported each year in the UK.  40% of incidents happen due to incorrect ladder placement angle, while overweight is behind for the other 50% of cases.

So, stick to the rules and overcome your fear of ladders!

Wrapping It Up!

Climacophobia, a.k.a ladder phobia, is not unusual and 30 people out of 1000 experience it. You can overcome it by ensuring the right angle and sticking to rules while using a ladder.

We hope that this article helps you overcome your fear of ladders. Well, in the meantime, hold on tight and start living your life without any fear.
